“Counterpart” by Mike Esperanza

New York Moves (3/20)

Some of the wonderful performances from the hurricane benefit concert yesterday at Peridance Capezio Center organized by Shelly Hutchinson.

In “Counterpart” choreographed by Mike Esperanza, dancers Sam Assemany and Nikki Wood were physically separated… but joined and constrained in the head. Here is my favorite moment in the piece, when they reached out with their fingers and connected for the first time.

“What We May Become” by Trace Stanfield

New York Moves (2/20)

Some of the wonderful performances from the hurricane benefit concert yesterday at Peridance Capezio Center organized by Shelly Hutchinson.

I love Tracie Stanfield‘s contemporary lyrical styles and naturally love this emotional, dynamic, yet graceful choreography by her company, SynthesisDANCE.

“Mucha” by Breton Tyner-Bryan

New York Moves (1/20)

Dancers in NYC came together yesterday to help raise relief funds for Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas affected by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

Here are some of the wonderful performances from the hurricane benefit concert at Peridance Capezio Center organized by Shelly Hutchinson.

The shows opened with the premiere of “Mucha” choreographed by Breton Tyner-Bryan. A high-energy Latin fusion. Dancers entered the stage leaping with a full turn in the air and never stopped for a moment.

APEX Choreographer Showcase

Wonderful performances by Lauren Wolter, Yoshimura Chikako, and other dancers last night. Peridance’s APEX Choreographer Showcase continues today at 4pm and 7:30pm. More info and tickets at Peridance Capezio Center. Go check them out!

Love the gorgeous dancing by the Hutchinson Collective and Lauren. I’ve seen the choreography “Days of the Open Hand” before, but the uplifting emotion that the movements inspire (accompanied by the soothing voice of George Michael) still gets to me every time.

Finally saw the expressive Chikako perform in a piece that reflects on ourselves as young adults — the longing for a home but also the desire to go out, challenge, and prove ourselves.

Other works tonight include: “Libertango” dramatic Argentine tango on pointe shoes (theatrically and technically!). “We the Artists” exploring the lives of the creative class through the metaphor of riding the New York subway. “T(i)nderness” a fun dance theatre about online dating.

Bravos to all the dancers. Thanks for a wonderful evening. I sadly can’t make the Sunday programs, but go see the show!

Children of Syria

Dancing for a cause at the Next Stage Project Showcase.

Many forms of movements tonight. The most striking, I thought, in its simplicity but also beauty, was the silent solo “Memory Current” danced by Miki Orihara and choreographed by Adam Barruch.

I like a couple pieces that took on a more literal interpretations of tonight’s theme. “Yes is here, no is also here” by Alexandra Beller is poetry-like, blending together spoken words, recorded audio, and movement, and challenges us to think about the current political state.

“You may say I’m a Dreamer” by Justin Yoon Sang Jo delivers a simple statement about peace through sign language, upbeat music (“Imagine” by John Lennon), and some fun movements.

Also, lovely dancing from the Hutchinson Collaborative and Lauren Wolter in “Days of the Open Hand.”

New York Jazz Choreographer Project

Celebrating International Dance Day with a night out at the New York Jazz Choreographer Project.

Great job Ashley Stafford on your fun playful piece! I couldn’t take my eyes off you all Maya Wassermann, Monica Azpeitia, and Kim Senisi. Also enjoyed the wonderful piece by Sue Samuels and the Jazz Roots Dance Company.

Some new favorite choreographers and dancers…

Absolutely love “Who Is She”: a touching narrative and beautiful movements created by Kavin T. Grant and danced by Cory Nicole Hinton and Ke’Yana Robinson. “Man’s World”: an expressive and emotional solo choreographed by Rachel Leigh Dolan and danced by Hannah Jennens. “windows within our very flesh”: a contemporary take on jazz by Antuan Byers. Bookending the show were two dynamic group pieces, a fierce “Men’s Medley” by Billy Griffin and a sweet “The Cave” by Ali Koinoglou and Koin & Co Dancers.

Missed the show tonight? Catch the second performance tomorrow 4pm at Peridance Capezio Center!
