I Am Here by Michelle Barber

“I Am Here” by Michelle Barber at the Broadway Dance Center Student Showcase.

I don’t usually post videos of myself, but I had a wonderful time dancing this month… so here they are!

First of all, endless many thanks to Michelle Barber for choreographing this powerful piece; for having me in your showcase; for your energy-filled classes; for your encouragement, kindness, and patience with a beginner like me; and for teaching me everything about dance the past two years. 🙏

Oklahoma!

A few belated posts from May.

Oklahoma! at the Circle in the Square Theatre on May 29.

Ali Stroker was brilliant. Otherwise, while I understand the show is a classic, I didn’t get Oklahoma! :/

Parsons Dance

More belated posts from May.

Parsons Dance at the Joyce Theater. Matinee on May 26.

It’s always worthwhile to go back and see Parsons Dance a second time during their New York season at the Joyce!

My favorites this season:

I love the whole concept of “Round My World” and the beautiful lines and movements.

I also love “Eight Women”, a piece that’s inspired by great women in history, created to honor Aretha Franklin, and set on the company by guest choreographer Trey McIntyre.

Memorable moments include Deidre Rogan’s wonderful presence in the opening scene and Zoey and Katie Garcia’s beautiful duet to the song “Natural Woman”.

Parsons Dance

More belated posts from May.

Parsons Dance at the Joyce Theater on May 25.

The highlight of the night goes to Zoey Anderson’s stunning performance of “Caught”. Her incredible strength, combined with her flexibility, elevates the already difficult choreography, consisting of more than 100 jumps within 5 minutes, to a whole different level.

Avenue Q

Avenue Q… still hilarious, raw, rude, upbeat, funny, and sooooo special after so many years.

15 years and 6,538 performances to be exact. Tonight was initially going to be the closing performance of this Tony Award Best Musical at the New World Stages, but that didn’t happen. The show will now run through May 26th.

Go see this wonderful production while you still can!

Several of themes: adulthood, the internet (is for porn), everyone is a little racists, homosexuality, sex on stage, etc. are just as offending and as funny as I had remembered them. In today’s polarized and hyper-sensitive political climate, I wasn’t sure how I (or the audience) would have enjoyed the rough treatment of the topics, but I came out loving every minute of the show.

The puppetry is phenomenal. The energy on stage is incredible. Every character from Princeton and Kate Monster down to the Bad Idea Bears each added just the perfect touch to the overall narrative.

Bravos to the entire cast: Grace Choi, Matt Dengler, Jamie Glickman, Jason Jacoby, Nick Kohn, Veronica J. Kuehn, and Lacretta. Thank you for giving us another amazing and memorable evening.

Now let me massage my cheeks, cuz they’re sore from laughing too much.

Finally, Broadway trivia… I knew Avenue Q won the Tony Award for Best Musical, but I didn’t know until this week that Avenue Q beat Wicked for the award. Whaaaaaat. Wow!!!

JCE Jazz Dance Project

Bravos Sofia Bengoa, Samantha Paulik, Michaela Romulo and Sadie NcNamara, for a great performance at the JCE Jazz Dance Project!!! Congrats also to Cristal Del Mar López and Julia Kane for presenting your work.

I’ve seen both Cristal’s and Julia’s choreographies before. Watching them again and sitting in the first row brought out all kinds of wonderful details.

Love the intricate steps to the piano keys in “Soledad” choreographed by Cristal Del Mar López and danced by Sofia Bengoa. The movements in “100 Years” choreographed by Julia Kane and danced by Julia Kane Dance Collective are so much sharper, more energetic, and more powerful than I had remembered. Beautiful work, Julia!

Other favorites tonight…

“Safety Dance” choreographed by Skye Mattox and performed by Skye Mattox and Ryan VanDenBoom. Looove the movements, chemistry, and personalities in the duet.

“Reclaiming My Time” by Paul A Brown. An upbeat classic theatre jazz piece with an abundance of positive energy centered on sisterhood, to the music of “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves”.

“Eleanor” by Muenter Merete. Another classic theatre jazz piece with beautiful lines and flowing movements, danced to the Beatle music “Eleanor Rigby”.

I’m saddened by the loss of Kavin Grant whose work “Who Is She” was one of my favorites in past concerts. RIP, Kavin.

Finally, get some sleep #teamnosleep!!!
